The Knowledge Codex (2026–2028) is an artistic research project that treats comics as data-rich, evolving media objects in the computational age. Run by Echo Chamber with Uppsala University, the project asks how the digitisation, metadata, and networked circulation of comics shift the medium’s cultural and aesthetic identity, and what computational tools — image parsing, data-mining, machine learning — open up for comics as a creative practice. Computational annotation is used to identify recurring graphic motifs — clouds, rising water levels, extreme weather events — across periods and cultural contexts. The final book is interested less in cataloguing environmental crises than in how comics communities visually narrate their experience of climate disruption.
